The Hair Column - ISSUE 2 (MK)

I am Hannah ,

owner of hairdressing brand HK Hair and I am delighted to be Disclosure’s hair expert.

Sustainability’ a word that is commonly used when we talk about the fashion and packaging industry but I want to dive into sustainability in the hair and beauty industry! Consumers and businesses have a responsibility to think sustainably. This can be anything small from reducing paper usage, looking at the packaging, saving energy (lights and electricity usage), waste reduction to making sustainable choices about energy or furniture suppliers.

Roughly 421,000 pounds of daily waste is produced by the hair and beauty industry and we are sadly one of the biggest contributors to landfills globally. When I first opened my own salon over 9 years ago, I knew I wanted to not only make people feel good but do good too.

I am delighted to say that we have incredible news that will give us the space and idyllic location to take our sustainable, inclusive, and accessible dreams come true! By the middle of May, the new home of HK Hair will be the beautiful Furtho Manor Farm in Old Strafford! An incredible space known as a stunning wedding venue, B&B, and working farm, with the most gorgeous views. The salon will be a go-to place for wellness and sustainability. Our salon space will be completely wheelchair friendly, including our shampoo stations and we will be inclusive to all hair types, needs, and preferences. Appointments will also be available on an exclusive use basis for clients who wish for privacy too.

As a sustainable hair salon, we focus on all elements of sustainability. Here is just a taster:

  • Our colour tubes are 100% recycled aluminum and can be recycled

  • All cardboard packaging is 85% recycled and fully recyclable

  • Colour tube plastic caps are 91%-100% recycled

  • All products in the salon (including colour) are Vegan, Cruelty-Free, and made at sustainable manufacturing sites

  • We even have sustainably sourced flooring going in and our heating is being produced with thanks to the animal manure on-site!

We are delighted to be partnering with the Green Salon Collective, an organisation bringing sustainability to our industry and providing us with a system for recycling ALL professional use items too. They will be collecting our waste paper, plastic, metal, hair, chemical, and PPE to recycle, reuse and help charities at the same time, all helping towards our Zero Waste Policy

As well as continuing to be an Ambassador for a fully sustainable and natural skincare brand, Tropic, we are also taking on a new professional hair care brand from Wella. WeDO, is a newly launched brand that offers cruelty-free, vegan society-certified, natural origin, and recycled packaging. The products contain no sulfate, no silicone, are dermatologically tested, and has options for all hair types.

We are so excited to share our new space with you in the coming weeks on our social media so do follow us on Instagram and Facebook at our handle @hairhkhair and do visit our website to request an appointment.

We are committed to our sustainable, inclusive, and accessible focus and would love to hear from other like-minded businesses in the wellness, holistic therapies, or sustainable fields to collaborate in our space. Also, get in touch if you are an incredible textured hair artist that is looking for a space to thrive or a barber wanting to grow. Employed and freelance opportunities will be considered – let's talk!
